EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
North Valley Music School, Whitefish, Montana

RESPONSIBILITIES
The Executive Director is responsible for visionary leadership and management of the North Valley Music School, a nonprofit organization located in beautiful Whitefish, Montana near Glacier National Park. NVMS offers private lessons, group classes, workshops, summer camps to nearly 700 students of all ages annually. It currently employs 15 full and part-time faculty and staff as well as additional summer camp faculty and has an annual budget of $375,000. NVMS has collaborations and partnerships with various Flathead Valley arts organizations. The NVMS mission is: to enrich our community though musical education and performance. The NVMS vision is: to expand our musical instruction to meet the needs of our community so that every child, adult and senior has access to quality instruction; to be a leader in music innovation and excellence; and to continue to find new ways to make music a part of everyday lives through performance.
Under the general direction of the Board of Directors, the Executive Director is responsible for: fundraising and development; organization leadership; board development; financial management; public relations, advertising and marketing; and facilities management.
These duties are detailed below.
Program Planning and Implementation
- Develop new and evaluate existing NVMS programs insuring consistency with mission, vision and policies.
- Oversee all programs and services to insure that program objectives are met.
Fundraising and Development
- Oversee and execute a comprehensive fundraising strategy including: annual fund drive; grant writing; individual, foundation and corporate giving and events working together with the Development Committee and Fundraising and Events Committee.
Organization Leadership
- Insure that the mission and values of NVMS are clear and operative throughout the organization.
- Oversee hiring of faculty and manage faculty and staff.
- Work with the Board, Faculty and Staff to develop and implement both short and long term strategic plans.
- Develop office and personnel policies; supervise and evaluate Staff and Faculty as needed.
- Promote and preserve NVMS’s friendly and supportive atmosphere.
- Develop a strong working relationship with the Board, Faculty, and Staff.
Board Development
- Work with the President of the Board of Directors to build, maintain and enable an effective Board of Directors to fulfill its governance function.
- Keep the Board of Directors fully informed on all important conditions, needs and issues of the organization.
- Help plan agendas for and attend Board of Directors meetings.
- Provide leadership for and facilitate the effective functioning of all Board Committees, and attend meetings as necessary.
Financial Management
Oversee and take appropriate actions to ensure the financial health of NVMS, including but not limited to the following:
- The preparation of the annual budget; and monthly financial reports.
- Operate within the parameters of the budget and the financial policies approved by the Board, and alert the Board of any financial problems.
- Provide oversight and leadership to the fundraising activities of NVMS to insure adequate contributed income to enable the organization to achieve its mission.
- Monitor the NVMS Endowment managed by the Whitefish Community Foundation.
Public Relations, Advertising and Marketing
- Serve as NVMS primary spokesperson and liaison with the community.
- Initiate press and advertising consistent with the mission, vision and strategic plan
- Develop positive relationships with students, families, donors, funders, schools and other constituents.
Facilities Management
- Manage and maintain the owned facility in a pleasing and safe condition working with the Facilities Committee.
- Identify facility needs and communicate with the needs to the Facilities Committee.
- Negotiate and manage satellite facility agreements and relationships.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelors degree or higher.
- Minimum of five (5) years experience working in a non-profit organization including supervising of staff and working with a board of directors.
- A passion for and knowledge of diverse styles of music and music education.
- Experience in developing and implementing organizational strategic plans.
- Experience in cultivating professional relationships and networking with a diverse group of individuals.
- Proven track record in creating and implementing fundraising strategies (including annual appeal, grant writing, corporate and individual gift cultivation and special events) including the ability to raise money.
- Financial management skills including the ability to create analyze and monitor budgets and financial statements.
- Persuasive and resourceful with a high energy level.
- Ability to prioritize.
- Demonstrated ability in public speaking, and organizational, interpersonal and communication skills.
- Willingness to work some evenings and weekends.
- Ability to travel, lift up to 50 pounds and walk up stairs.
- Attend professional development as the budget allows.
- Ability to project a professional image through appropriate dress and appearance.
- Solid computer skills, including the ability to learn new technology.
SALARY RANGE
$30,000 to $33,500 for ¾ full time ($40,000 to $45,000 FTE) depending on qualifications and experience.
