Oct 03, 2011 Chicago, IL WGL
On October 3, Guild member organization, Chicago Arts Partnerships in Education (CAPE), organized "Arts Strike" at Telpochcalli School, in Chicago's Pilsen neighborhood. The strike brought together renowned cellist Yo-Yo Ma, ballet star/producer/director Damian Woetzel, arts education leader/violinist/spoken word artist Aaron Dworkin, and hip-hop dancer Lil Buck as part of a national effort to increase arts education in public schools. The four artists spent time in third and fourth grade classrooms before leading an interactive demonstration with 300 students and their teachers. CAPE concluded the event with a roundtable discussion on arts education. Roundtable participants included CEO of Chicago Public Schools Jean-Claude Brizard and CAPE's Executive Director Amy Rasmussen. They were joined by a President's Committee on Arts and the Humanities member, local arts education organization representatives and supporters, and artists.
