Feb 03, 2017

Karen Bruno, director of the Lawrence Academy of Music (Appleton, WI), recently published an article in the Post-Crescent that highlighted creative youth development (CYD) and the role of arts programs in creating positive outcomes for youth.

“Throughout the country, organizations like the National Endowment for the Arts, Americans for the Arts and the National Guild for Community Arts Education work to create, study and recognize effective programs that focus on creative youth development,” Bruno writes. “Their studies show that these programs encourage growth in the areas of ingenuity and grit, critical thinking and problem-solving skills, and collaboration and confidence.”

The article goes on to outline some of the key observable qualities of CYD:

  • Emphasizes youth agency
  • Creates opportunities for youth to take risks in a safe environment
  • Provides tools for becoming engaged and thoughtful adults
