On November 4, seven community arts education leaders will be honored with the National Guild’s Milestone Certificate of Appreciation for their long-standing, exceptional service to the field. The Milestone program recognizes leaders who have demonstrated a commitment to supporting and advancing community arts education for more than 20 years.

Certificates will be presented during the Guild's Annual Meeting at the Conference for Community Arts Education (Chicago, IL). This year’s recipients are:

  • Cynthia Campoy Brophy, Executive Director and Founder, artworxLA, Los Angeles, CA
  • Bau Graves, Executive Director, Old Town School of Folk Music, Chicago, IL
  • David Lapin, Executive Director, Community Music Center of Boston, Boston, MA
  • Nancy Ng, Director of Community Engagement, Luna Dance Institute, Berkeley, CA
  • Laurie Russell, Executive Director, Winchester Community Music School, Winchester, MA
  • Kwame Scruggs, Founder and Director of Programs and Trainings, Alchemy, Akron, OH
  • Rita Simó, Founder, The People's Music School, Chicago, IL

“This year’s awardees are an incredibly dedicated and influential group,” said Jonathan Herman, executive director of the National Guild. “They are leaders who have all had a tremendous impact on their diverse communities, providing arts programs in music, dance, visual and media arts, and myth, which educate and inspire their students. The National Guild is proud to count them and their vital organizations among our members.”

Nominations for the Milestone Certificate of Appreciation are accepted year-round. Nominees must be executive directors or divisional directors of Guild member organizations to be eligible. Click here for more information on National Guild awards.
