The National Guild has produced a new report with data and best practices collected from partnerships between arts education organizations and public schools. Titled The Practice of Partnership: High-Impact Arts Education Partnerships with K-12 Schools, the report details characteristics of successful collaborations supported by the Guild’s nine-year MetLife Foundation Partners in Arts Education Program (PIAE).

Arts education organizations are increasingly working with school districts to complement arts learning in public schools—especially in underserved communities. And with arts and music defined as necessary components of a well-rounded education in the Every Student Succeeds Act this movement is likely to increase. The Practice of Partnership provides practical strategies for developing and sustaining these kinds of partnerships and includes case studies from successful Guild member organizations. The report also examines the important role of funders and policymakers in bringing meaningful arts education to students.

“We know that arts organizations can provide a depth of instruction that many public schools don’t have the resources to offer otherwise,” said Jonathan Herman, executive director of the Guild. “We wanted to provide support for the dedicated teachers, teaching artists, staff, administrators, funders, and parents who help bring arts education to so many young people. This report is a valuable resource, gathered from the evaluation of hundreds of partnerships, with insights and effective practices for their work providing high-impact arts learning.”

Detailed within the report are elements from successful arts programs supported through PIAE, including clear communications and partnership structures, shared responsibility for program funding, cultural and community responsiveness, joint professional development for teachers and teaching artists, and evaluation of both the program and partnership process.

The Guild and MetLife Foundation developed PIAE out of a shared belief that access to arts education must be universal, must address issues of inequity, and must take place over a sustained period to have durable impact. The institutions also agreed that community arts organizations can partner with public schools to supplement learning, and that the ability to partner well makes a significant difference in the quality of education. Between 2005 and 2014, the PIAE program documented and disseminated effective practices, and provided grants, training, and technical assistance to advance partnership practice across the community arts education field. Forty-nine organizations received 109 grants, totaling $1,889,400. Grantees partnered with 694 public schools to serve 79,467 students. A total of 2,971 public school teachers and 848 teaching artists were engaged and trained. 

Prior to this, the PIAE program also produced two handbooks filled with resources for creating lasting partnerships: Partners in Excellence: A Guide to Community School of the Arts/Public School Partners from Inspiration to Implementation and Profiles in Excellence: Case Studies of Exemplary Arts Education Partners. These handbooks are available as free downloads on the Guild’s Publications page.
