The European Union has proposed the world's largest ever cultural funding program, with €1.8 billion allocated for visual and performing arts, film, music, literature, and architecture. If the Creative Europe project is approved late 2012, funds will be released between 2014 and 2020 to an estimated 300,000 artists. The European Commission hopes to stimulate the economy by first stimulating arts and cutlure.
The proposal has received a mixed response. Many key commenatators have expressed skeptisism that an artistic boost could result in a sizable economic boost in this time of deep financial crisis. Others wonder if the funds will find there way to those truly in need of financial assitance.
